“The Wizard of Oz” Comes to Atlanta
“Toto, I’ve [got] a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
Dorothy couldn’t have said it better and last night Downtown Atlanta was apparently attempting to remake TWOO when an EF2 tornado tore a 6-mile path of destruction through the city. It has been pretty remarkable here and I appreciate everyone’s concern. I’ve heard from friends in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Dallas. It’s nice to know that they were thinking of me (as a matter of fact, my friend Adam got a call from his mother about the weather and hung up on her to call me immediately).
Situations like this remind me that I am proud to live in Atlanta. We shine in situations like this and unfortunately we’ve had quite a bit of experience. In 1996 Centennial Olympic Park was bombed by Eric Robert Rudolph. Last year a charter bus carrying 35 people from Bluffton University crashed right before rush hour. Now we have the events from last night when the city was hosting thousands of visitors for several different events (including the SEC Basketball Tournament). Once again the city came together under Mayor Shirley Franklin’s direction. No one was killed, very few were injured, and the clean-up process has already begun.
Coverage on CNN has been pretty extensive and their headquarters got a direct hit from the storm. In case you’ve missed the news, here are some videos I found on YouTube regarding the situation.
Coverage from CNN
Video taken at The Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts
Water flooding through The Georgia World Congress Center
Footage taken on the street right after the tornado hit
Aerial footage from WSB-TV
Please feel free to share your comments and stories below. I’d love to hear what some of my neighbors have to say about all of this.
